This year's holiday concert will feature a varied collection of seasonal carols, motets, and songs, as well as a Latin Mass written by one Salvatore Guaragna (aka Harry Warren). Last spring I read Wilfrid Sheed's recent opus, The House that George Built. In the section he titled "Harry Warren: King of the Unknown and his Quiet Reign," Sheed mentions that Michael Feinstein sent him a part of a Latin mass Warren finished in 1962. After a great deal of scrambling and research, I was able to procure not one, not two, but three versions of the score.
Presenting a mass at a Christmas concert seemed appropriate, especially one by Harry Warren -- he was born on Christmas Eve, 1893. At times, finding music to fill out the program was challenging, but the results should prove fun for you, the audience. Included are an "Ave Maria" by Edward Elgar; "Little Lord" by Chicago composer Dan Tucker; Craig Courtney's "A Musicological Journey...," and "A Christmas Carol" by Tom Lehrer, to whom I extend my gratitude for allowing me to arrange his song for us to perform. We even included an opportunity for you to join in singing with us on William Ferris's "Now the Christ Child...."
