Songs of the Season
A Holiday Concert by The Michael Teolis Singers
Our annual holiday concert will feature “The Ballad of the Brown King”, a
Christmas cantata written by Chicago composer, Margaret Bonds, with a
text by Langston Hughes. The piece, which was written in the 1950s and
makes use of popular styles of the day, was originally composed as a
solo song, was developed into a fully orchestrated cantata by Bonds, and
published in a simple piano/vocal score in 1961. MTS will perform
Bond’s recently realized original manuscript of the vocal parts. Along
with other carols and songs, we will present Kirke Mechem’s carol
arrangement, “The Seven Joys of Christmas”. This concert will be a
wonderful start to your Holiday Season.
